Deep Tissue Massage Benefits

massageSo I have been lifting weights since high school. Its been a long journey, and along the way I have had my fair share of nagging injuries and serious injuries. On top of the injuries, the punishment I dish out to my body and muscles when I train is pretty extreme.

I have been saying for year now how I wanted to get a deep tissue massage, but I never got around to it.

This time I finally did. I went a massage therapist that was highly recommended by a few people I know. Her name is Sue Saffari. She is tiny compared to me, and I thought immediately “there is no way this tiny woman will put a dent in me”. Holy shit was I wrong.  The massage was very deep and felt good in a painful way. Deep tissue massages aren’t meant to be relaxing and joyful. They are meant to get the job done.

I had her focus on some of my problem areas, such as my Lats, shoulders and lower back. She took care of everything else but paid special attention to these areas.

As she was working on me I could feel her digging deep within my muscle tissue. The more she worked, the more I felt my muscles begin to loosen up. The combination of high stress and torturous workouts had definitely left its mark.

Lets look at some of the benefits of a Deep Tissue Massage…..

  • Increased Range of Motion

Massage treatments help to increase range of motion for bodybuilders. Muscle tightness from extreme lifting can limit range of motion.  Deep tissue massages stretch bundles of your muscle fibers to improve tissue elasticity. Massage treatments may release tension and pressure by stretching the sheath or fascia around your muscles. Massages can also restore mobility by breaking down scar tissue caused by extreme training, previous injuries or trauma.

  • Added Definition and Muscle Mass

Deep tissue massages can help to increase definition and even muscle mass by increasing circulation. Damaged or tight muscle tissues are less capable of effeciently holding blood which can diminish your muscle definietion and even rob you of potential muscle mass. Remember, more blood flow = more nutrient delivery = better recovery = more muscle. This alone makes this a done deal for me.

  • Pain Reduction

Bodybuilding and extreme weight training can and often result in injuries. Massage therapy can help you recover from minor aches and pains by improving your circulation. Improved circulation is an essential part of the healing process. Massage also triggers the release of endorphins which are your body’s natural pain killers.

I got the massage done on a week that I was off from lifting. I plan on doing this every time I take my scheduled reacovy leave. This will serve as part of my recovery and healing process. The day after I was surprisngly sore all over yet I felt refreshed and far less tense. I noticed a drastic improvement in my range of motion especially in the shoulder department. In conclusion, I am very satisfied with my choice to get the massage, I wish I had gone years ago like I said, and I plan on getting one done at least every 3-4 months.
